Stormy Weather

Thunder and lightning can be downright scary for any of us. That’s especially true for our dog and cat friends because they really don’t understand what’s going out there. Here are a few ideas that may help keep them calm and feeling safe.

  • Make sure your cat and dog friends are indoors during thunderstoms and if you can, be home with them.
  • For your dog, give them calming attention. Speak to them in a calm, reassuring voice. Show them lots of love.
  • Your cat might want to hide until the storm is over and that’s okay. Don’t try to take them from their hiding place until they’re ready to come out. And if they want some reassuring attention, show them some love, too.
  • Try distracting them with some playtime activities. Let them play if they want to, but don’t try to force them.
  • Your pet friends might rely on you to know how to feel during those loud thunderstorms. If you can be calm and relaxed, maybe they can, too.
  • In all cases, think safety first. If you can stay inside safely then do so. But if you should have to leave in order to stay safe, don’t abandon your pet friends if it’s at all possible!
