Summer Time!

Summer days mean fun in the sun, but those dog days of summer can be dangerous for our four legged friends. So, here are a few tips Paw and Pal want you to know about caring for pets during hot weather.

  • If you can’t walk barefoot on the hot sidewalk, neither can your dog! Walk them in the grass, and try to keep off hard surfaces as much as you can.
  • Always provide plenty of cool fresh water, and a nice shady place to hang out.
  • Drop a few ice cubes in the water dish to cool it down, or give them as a treat.
  • When you’re on the go, keep a bottle filled with cool water handy, for you and your pet friend!
  • Never, ever, leave your pet friends in a parked vehicle, even with open windows. It gets super hot in there very quickly!
  • Keep a close eye on your dog on hot days, and know the signs of heat exhaustion: Excessive panting; raspy breath; discolored gums.
  • Dogs love the beach just as much as you do, but on those extremely hot days it’s better for them not to have doggy day at the beach.
  • Protect your pet’s eyes! Your dog probably loves to hang their head out of the car window while riding but that’s really not safe for them. The wind in their face can be very strong, and they could be hit by flying insects, leaves, sticks, or even pebbles! And that could really do some damage to your pet, especially their eyes. You wouldn’t let your child hang out a car window while riding and risk injury, so don’t let your pets do it, either.
